This Spring the gardening team were made aware of trees that were encroaching on homes, and quickly got to work to provide and innovative and cost-effective solution to get the issue resolved.

Six trees behind an apartment block on Old School Lane in Meir had become overgrown and were blocking the sunlight from surrounding homes.

Estates Team Leader Mark Quinn, who is an expert in tree surgery and has over 30 years of gardening experience, inspected the trees to decide the best course of action.

After close inspection, Mark found that the trees had Ash Dieback and needed to be cut back. Looking into the issue, Mark found suppliers that could remove the trees but at a cost of over £6,000.

To offer value for money for residents, Mark put his experience and training of working at height to use, to provide a cost-effective solution, which means the money can now be spent elsewhere on projects that are important to you.

Instead of using a contractor he instead, headed up into the trees, securing and cutting back branches before lowering them to the ground.

Mark said that residents were really pleased with the outcome and shared some fantastic feedback.

“It was such a great experience”, said Mark.

“I was able to use my expert knowledge learned working as a member of the Staffs Housing gardening team to good use.

“I’m trained to work at height and have extensive knowledge of trees, so I was able to put both to use to provide a great service for customers.

“Customers were keen to watch the jobs and see the progress. Once complete, they also shared how grateful they were that I was able to remove the trees and bring light back into their homes.

“Overall, it was a job well-done, and I was proud to of made a difference.”
